www.LifeLock.com was founded in the spring of 2005 by CEO Todd Davis and his partners from banking, securities, credit and payment industries. Fast forward three years, and by the spring of 2008 the identity theft protection service has 700,000 customers, and has received the 100 Global Award by Red Herring, meaning they’ve been voted one of the top 100 start-up companies in the world. Along the way, www.LifeLock.com has also acquired roughly $40 million in venture funds from giants such as Bessemer Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and Goldman Sachs.
That’s a lot to accomplish in such a short time, but their innovation has made it possible. www.LifeLock.com’s initial service was limited to the industry standards of providing their customers with fraud alerts and renewals, annual credit reports, and reducing the amount of junk mail, pre-approved credit offers and phone solicitation calls their clients received. But, unlike most of their competitors, they didn’t stop there.
www.LifeLock.com developed WalletLock and gave it to all new and existing customers in December 2007 at no additional charge. If customers’ wallets are lost or stolen, they contact www.LifeLock.com’s recovery specialists who assist them in canceling and replacing their credit cards and bank cards, and in replacing insurance and professional licensure cards, Social Security cards, checkbooks, passports and visas—even traveler’s checks. WalletLock is a www.LifeLock.com exclusive product and is only available to LifeLock’s clients.
Just a few months later, www.LifeLock.com introduced two more innovative and exclusive services, TrueAddress and eRecon. Both services use cutting-edge technology to scan and monitor the internet for any indication a client’s identity has been stolen, or their personal information is being sold or traded. In light of the 314 million records lost or stolen in corporate and governmental data breaches since 2002, this additional layer of protection is essential.
TrueAddress monitors the millions of address changes processed by the US Postal Service annually. If an address change has been submitted for a Life Lock customer, but not by the customer, it’s a sure bet an identity attack is underway. Thieves will often re-direct their victims’ mail to prevent or delay detection.
eRecon scans the internet for any occurrence of a customer’s name, date of birth, Social Security number, or account numbers. The internet works as a global marketplace where identity thieves buy, sell and trade the personal and financial information necessary for their crimes. If eRecon detects criminal activity involving a client’s information, the transaction information is noted, and the client is contacted and advised of additional security measures that should be taken. The transaction’s information can be made available to law enforcement officials who then have a better chance of catching the perpetrators.
Other companies may be content to offer the same services year after year. LifeLock.com remains committed to their mission of preventing and protecting their customers from ID theft. Within six months LifeLock.com has launched three innovative and exclusive services and given them to their clients at no additional cost. That’s exceptional. That’s LifeLock's passionate commitment to their mission.
