In a democracy, not everyone will be happy with the results on the day after a presidential election. But in Charlottesville NC, Republicans and Democrats alike are disgusted and afraid for their futures.

Not because of the election results, but because someone stole two laptop computers that contained names, addresses, dates of birth and Department of Motor Vehicle customer numbers for every registered voter in town.

The theft occurred after the polling place at Tonsler Park had closed on Election Day, and all the votes had been counted. Later than night, someone broke in by throwing a cinder block through a glass door and made off with the laptops.

The theft leaves more than 25,000 registered voters at risk of identity theft.

Elections officials are anxious to make sure two important points are made clear:

All information on the laptops was encrypted, though some of the information is considered public information and is available to anyone who requests it.

The theft took place after the voting precinct had closed and all votes had been counted and does not affect the election outcome.

Police doubt that the thief, or thieves, were interested in the voter information on the laptops, and probably don’t even know what information is on the laptops. They are, nonetheless, trying to find the perpetrator, and consider the case a high priority.

Absolutely everyone is vulnerable to identity theft, but LifeLock has all the tools necessary to minimize the risk. Visit their website at LifeLock.com. If you decide to join their nearly 1.5 million members, use the LifeLock promotion code Defense to get the best price available.
