LifeLock reviews: My firsthand account

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

So far, so good. I’m six months into my new LifeLock membership, and so far everything has gone just like they said it would.

I received my notice that I would no longer receive pre-approved credit offers within a few days. Hallelujah! ID thieves steal mail as one of the most common methods of ID theft, and every time I pulled a credit offer with a check out of my mailbox, I worried about whether there had been others I’d missed.

Because of the work I do, I know that a common ID theft technique is to change the victim’s address to divert mail and obtain personal and financial information. LifeLock’s TrueAddress™ monitors address changes and confirms that if my address is changed, it’s because I changed it.

I received my credit reports within just a couple weeks. We’re all supposed to review our credit reports annually, and with LifeLock, it gets done. Only 36% of Americans actually follow that advice, and it’s a relief to be among the 64% who do. (more…)

LifeLock only ID theft service with “A+” from BBB

Friday, June 26th, 2009

The most important time to check out a company on the Better Business Bureau’s website might be when you’re shopping for an ID theft protection service. After all, whichever company you choose, you’re going to have to give them a whole lot of personal and financial information. Unfortunately, there are a whole lot of ID theft companies out there. But, you’ve come to the right place, because I’ve made your life a lot easier by doing a quick BBB check on the 12 most prominent ID theft service companies as identified by the Consumer Federation of America.

Here’s what I found: LifeLock is the only of the 12 companies to receive an A+ ranking by the Better Business Bureau. (more…)

Looking for new experiences in 2009? Join the millions who’ve become ID theft victims!

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

If you’re like most people, your New Year’s resolution to work out more is a distant memory and you’ve already gained two more pounds. But what about the promise you made yourself to try something new?

If you haven’t made your reservation yet for a hot air balloon ride, how about becoming an identity theft victim instead? Granted, it’s hardly a unique experience—roughly 10 million people are doing it every year—but it’s like no other experience you’ve ever had.

How to get started

    • Put your Social Security card and all your credit cards in your wallet. Leave your wallet lying out on your desk at work while you go to the restroom. If you carry a purse, leave it unzipped when in public places. In fact, hang it on the back of your chair so any potential identity thieves know you’re looking for action.

    Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

We’re all experiencing anxiety (or outright panic) in the face of diminishing job security, escalating interest rates and sinking home values. I hate to add to the daily financial sturm und drang—and I beg your forgiveness—but you need to know about the increasing risk of identity theft related to data breaches and this recession. (more…)

Job seekers need ID theft protection services

    Monday, February 9th, 2009

As of January 2009, 11.6 million Americans are unemployed, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs are hard to come by these days, and job seekers are desperately applying a shotgun approach, using headhunters, professional networking and a number of online job sites.

Unfortunately, rather than becoming full-time employees, many applicants may become identity theft victims instead. (more…)

Get ID protection before some nitwit gives up your personal information

    Thursday, January 29th, 2009

There’s a reason bloggers like me are always harping about the need for identity theft services like those offered by LifeLock: it’s because so many nitwits are in charge of your personal information.

Before I begin my rant, let me start by saying the folks in the Madison, Wisconsin Human Resources Department are probably good people. Like their imaginary Minnesota neighbors of Lake Wobegon, they’re probably a bunch of strong women, good-looking men and the parents of above-average children.

But how did their kids get so darned smart if their parents are nitwits? (more…)

ID theft: US servicemen and women placed in harm’s way

    Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

The lives of America’s military men and women are at risk everyday while they serve in Iraq and Afghanistan. Apparently, their identities are on the line, too.

Chris Ogle of New Zealand bought a second-hand MP3 player for $9 while visiting an Oklahoma thrift store last year. He never could get the darn thing to download songs from the Internet, maybe because it already held so many U.S. military files. (more…)

Identity theft stories don’t get much freakier than this one from Annapolis, MD. And, making it worse, the guy responsible is out on bond and probably reprising his act.

OK, here’s the story of the identity theft crime allegedly committed by Thomas Calvin Eichelberger:

Last September Eichelberger entered into a job contract with a man we’ll call Bob (because, trust me, “Bob” doesn’t want anyone linking him to this story). Afterwards, they stopped by a gas station where Eichelberger bought Bob a cappuccino. After he drank the coffee, Bob said he started feeling lightheaded, but the two went on to have a few drinks at a local restaurant and then went back to Eichelberger’s place where they had a couple more drinks and Bob got sick.

When Bob comes to, he finds himself naked on Eichelberger’s bed while his host sits clothed in a chair looking at him. Bob hung around a little longer, found a camera under Eichelberger’s bed and got sick again. Can you guess what was on the camera? Good guess! The camera held pictures of Bob and Bob’s naked butt.
