File it under the heading of “No Good Deed Goes Unpunished.”
The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration is sending out letters to 55,000 organ donors to notify them of a data breach that occurred June 20. Apparently, a glitch in the system allowed unauthorized users to access the data base containing information on the six million good souls from the Sunshine State who agreed not to take their organs with them. If you know anything about identity theft, you know that it can ruin your credit. What most people don’t know is that it can also strain relationships.
- You’ll fight with your spouse about who’s to blame. Financial stress is the most common cause of divorce.
- You’ll be extremely stressed because the clean up never goes smoothly, and your credit will be damaged, and bill collectors will hound you.
- You’ll suspect friends, family, and that nice kid you always talk to at the convenience store.
Even your credit can be repaired eventually — sometimes it takes years — but your relationships may never be the same.

Whether it’s grade school or college, your kids’ risk for identity theft increases when they go to school. So when you’re stocking up on school supplies this summer, make sure your kids are protected against identity theft by enrolling them in LifeLock’s identity theft protection plan.
For the younger set, the risk originates with the after-school and sports programs that require a lot of personal information for registration. And the university that uses Social Security numbers as student identifiers is one of the biggest sources of information for identity thieves.
Just like your identity can be stolen, so can your kids’. Think of all the forms you fill out at the start of the new school year. If you’re a working parent, chances are you have to enroll your child in before and after-school programs. And, of course there are all the release forms you have to fill out so they can play football or go on field trips. Do you know where those forms are filed? Do you know who has access to them, or what steps are taken to keep them from falling into the wrong hands? Read the rest of this entry »

Before you plop down $8.50 for a movie ticket, you read the movie reviews. Before you buy a car, you read the reviews. If you’re thinking about subscribing to an identity theft prevention service, you may be interested in reading the hundreds of Life Lock reviews on the internet.Or, maybe not. Maybe instead of reading somebody else’s Life Lock reviews, you’d like to look at the evidence yourself instead. For instance, LifeLock now has somewhere in the neighborhood of 700,000 customers. All 700,000 customers have already compared LifeLock to other services, and chosen LifeLock. That’s a good sign. Read the rest of this entry »

Sometimes we buy things to solve our problems. For example, my husband and I just bought a new riding mower to help take care of our new, larger lawn. I’m about to buy a bicycle to help take care of my new, larger…dress size.
Other times, we get really smart and buy things that keep us from having problems. In my own case, a gym membership or a home treadmill to help me stay in shape in the first place would’ve been a great idea.
LifeLock works both ways. It works preemptively, preventing thieves from stealing your identity. It also helps make a nasty problem–like a lost purse or a stolen wallet–a lot easier to cope with. With LifeLock, problems occur less frequently. And, with LifeLock, problems that do come up are smaller, easier to deal with. Read the rest of this entry »

It doesn’t happen often, but occasionally you might come across complaints about Life Lock. Some people smirk and complain that Life Lock provides services you can do for yourself for free. Or, they say other people are crazy to give Life Lock all their personal information. In each of these complaints, there is a bit of legitimacy … but just a bit.
Some, but not all, of the services LifeLock provides, you could be doing for yourself. These are the things you could do yourself that are included in your LifeLock membership:
- Fraud alerts should be placed on your accounts with the major credit reporting companies. These expire every 90 days, so don’t forget to renew. You can do this free of charge.
- You should order and review your credit reports from all agencies at least once a year. You can do this free of charge.
- Those pre-approved credit card offers you get in the mail provide a wonderful opportunity for identity thieves. You should remove your information from junk mail lists. You need to do this annually, but it is free.
- It’s a common scam for pretexters, posing as phone solicitors, to call your house and tell you you’ve won a free trip. Then they ask for your credit card number to reserve a hotel room for you. You need to remove your name from all phone solicitation lists, and again, you need to do this annually, but it is free.
How many people do you think actually do all this stuff and follow up the renewals? Read the rest of this entry »
