Michael,

LIkeLock is not an insurance company, nor do they claim to be one. If I were you, I would be very skeptical about companies that refer to their identity theft protection services as insurance. Companies selling insurance are subject to state and federal licensing and regulations similar to those of banks, and it's highly doubtful that the ID theft services companies you're talking about are legitimate.

LifeLock's $1 million total service guarantee backs up their product and is based on the same simple premise of other guarantees we're all familiar with: If we sell you a defective product, we'll honor our responsibility. In the case of a defective washing machine, the company will service the appliance or replace it. If there is a defect in LifeLock's service that results in a member's identity theft, LifeLock will spend up to $1 million to help in the repair and recovery efforts.

I see that LifeLock provides some kind of special help [$1 million] if THEY are at fault in some way regarding the theft or attempted theft of your identity.
However, what about the $1 million "insurance" boasted by other ID theft companies that LifeLock does not provide?

Thanks, Tiana. I wrote an honest review and report on 10/20/09 about my own experience with LifeLock. I've been researching and writing about ID theft full time for almost 3 years, and have never heard or read anything about stolen emails. I've heard the stuff about their $1million service. It is limited because it's impossible to completely prevent ID theft--there are hundreds of stories about identities stolen by bank, hospital, insurance employees and recently one about an AT&T temp who stole info. According to a VerizonBusiness study, more than 280 MILLION records were compromised in data breaches in 2008. If you read of a service that claims to PREVENT ID theft, run! What LifeLock provides in a service that helps their members protect themselves, catch the incident early and move on through damage control.
